Frome Jazz Club presents Next to Silence featuring John Martin

Saxophonist and multiphonics guru John Martin recently moved to the area from London and first appeared at Frome Jazz Club in October 2017, for a gig “Between the Notes” that many said afterwards was their favourite so far at the club. On Thursday 5 April, John returns to play a selection of music associated with the ECM record label.

ECM is so iconic that people talk about the ECM sound almost as a genre of its own. ECM artists are often from the jazz world but ECM albums draw from many sources, including classical music (ranging from early to experimental) and traditional music from many countries. The characteristic ECM sound is open textured, rhythmically loose, harmonically adventurous, and highly evocative – although of what, it can be hard to say! The label’s motto is said to be “The Most Beautiful Sound Next to Silence.”
