Your chance to visit a working bell-founding and bell engineering firm. See and hear how bells are cast, tuned, repaired and hung at Matthew Higby’s workshop in Charlton.
Matthew is responsible for repairing, tuning and re-hanging bells all over the world, as well as making bells in Somerset. He also built the Charmborough Ring.
Suitable for all ages but under 18s must be accompanied by a supervising adult. Please wear enclosed footwear. Minibus will leave from outside the Cheese & Grain. £10 (to cover travel costs). Tour – 1 hour plus travel time maximum 16.
There are 4 visits 1.30, 2.30, 3.30 and 4.30 pm to the foundry. A 16 seater minibus will pick people up from outside the Cheese & Grain half an hour before each visit so at 1pm for the 1.30 visit. And 2pm for the 2.30 visit and so on 3.00 pm and the last one at 4. pm. It is a shuttle service so the 2pm minibus taking the visitors to the 2.30 pm visit will bring back those on the 1.30 visit and so one throughout the day. The cost of the ticket is just to cover the travel to and from the foundry.
