Compost Champions Training Day

If you know a thing or two about composting then the people of Somerset need you! Somerset’s Compost Champions scheme is looking to recruit volunteers to help promote home composting with a free training day in October.

This one-day training course will be run by Carymoor Environmental Trust and is aimed at volunteers who will then be asked to pass on their skills to promote the benefits of home composting. There are now over 60 volunteers across Somerset who help to raise awareness amongst the wider public of the benefits of composting.

Volunteers can promote composting in a variety of ways. This could include giving a demonstration to a next-door neighbour or friend; giving a presentation at a local school or community group; writing articles for the local paper, parish magazine or newsletter; or attending an event with a display. Becoming a Compost Champion is a great way to meet new people, learn valuable skills, and benefit from being part of a team that makes a difference.

Compost Champions visit events and give talksall over Somerset, sharing their expertise with the public and passing on practical hints and tips. Almost a third of the waste produced from Somerset’s households could be home composted, transforming food and garden waste into a free fertilizer that improves soil structure and helps plants to grow. So if you’d like to join the team and help make a big impact in reducing waste to landfill then book a place!

The day will cover: Why compost?; the composting process; siting a bin; different composting methods; how to use compost in the garden; how to become a ‘Compost Champion’ and encourage people to compost at home.

Compost Champion training is free but volunteers must undertake to champion the cause in their community. Carymoor will pay reasonable travel expenses, provide display materials and be available to give advice if needed. Lunch will be provided on the day.
