The Old Showfield
The Old Showfield
The Old Showfield is a large open green space on the edge of the town centre, near the medical centre and hospital.
The field is also known locally as the Cheese Field – a reminder that it used to be the site of the town’s annual Cheese Show.
The space is managed by Frome Town Council and areas are left unmown in Spring to encourage wildflowers and support biodiversity.
There’s plenty of room to stretch your legs and space for walking dogs, with paved paths around the site as well as wide open areas. The Old Showfield also contains a fenced off play area for children, where dogs are not allowed and there is plenty of play equipment for older children, as well as for the young ones. An outdoor gym near the play area provides a way for all ages to get active, and the park hosts Frome’s weekly Park Run. Visitors to the Park Run congregate near the yellow barrier at the end of the Cricket Club car park at 9 am each Saturday.
A small orchard in one part of the Old Showfield contains a selection of apple trees and there are fruit bushes, an olive tree and bay trees to provide edible items for all to enjoy. A blossom circle, containing a range of cherry trees, has been planted for a beautiful Spring display.
The Cricket Club is located on the edge of the park, and matches are played throughout the summer.
