History & Heritage
Frome may be known as a modern, fashionable town, but it’s also steeped in history, dating back to around the 7th century. Once one of the largest towns in Somerset, Frome boasts a rich industrial heritage founded in the wool and cloth industry and later metal-working and printing. Although these industries have since declined, their legacy lives on with Frome laying claim to over 350 listed buildings – more than any other town in Somerset.
The Frome Museum is a hive of information and Frome’s popular guided walks offer a unique insight into the town’s colourful past. Once you’ve exhausted all that Frome has to offer, Frome is perfectly placed to explore other historic towns and sites including Bath, Wells, Lacock, nearby castles and even Stonehenge.
