The Singer photographic archive was dramatically saved from destruction by Singer’s employee Steve Francis, when he saw they were being thrown into a skip. Miraculously, many of the glass plate negatives survived, and have now been conserved as part of the Casting the World project. Sarah Allen, Photographic Materials Conservator, discusses the project, explaining how the restoration process has stabilised the objects and allowed their rich imagery to be released. Sarah will also discuss how the negatives are to be preserved and will give tips on how to care for your own family photographs.
