EUROPEAN UNION: LEAVE OR REMAIN? JOIN THE DEBATE AT A FREE EVENT IN FROME, WEDS 15th JUNE
On 23rd June, the UK goes to the polls to decide whether to remain part of the European Union, a hugely significant democratic decision. But how much do most of us really know about the EU, its benefits and costs, and what leaving would mean for the UK, and for the South West?
‘European Union: Leave or Remain?’, a free event in Frome on Wednesday 15th June at 7pm, will give people the opportunity to quiz two Members of the European Parliament for the South West region, and hear their very different views on the EU and the referendum. The venue is Assembly Rooms, Memorial Theatre, Christchurch St West, BA11 1EB.
Dr Molly Scott Cato (Green Party) is an economist and writer who has campaigned for green politics all her adult life. Aside from her work as an economist Molly’s areas of special interest include land ownership and food production; renewable energy, especially when it is owned by local communities; co-operatives and self-managed firms; and issues concerned with peace and opposing nuclear weapons and nuclear power. Molly is leading the South West Greener In campaign, making the environmental and progressive case for remaining in the EU.
Dr Julia Reid (UKIP) is a research biochemist by profession and was formerly Head of Academic Research / Laboratory Manager of the Diabetes and Lipid Research Laboratory at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. Julia has been an ardent opponent of the Common Market, the European Economic Community, the European Community and the European Union since the 1960’s and campaigned for a “No” vote in the 1975 referendum. She is a prominent campaigner for the Leave campaign in the South West.
Members of the public are invited to email their questions for the two MEPs to eufrome@gmail.com, and can also submit questions on the night. The event will be independently chaired by Lisa Millard, Assistant Principal at Frome College.
Entry is free, with donations to cover venue hire welcome (any additional donations collected will be given to local charities). Doors open at 6.30pm, and the bar will be open.
The event is organised by East Mendip Green Party.
