South African jazz emerged in Cape Town at a similar time to American jazz in New Orleans, also inspired by blues, spirituals and street bands but taking a path of its own. Whatever the tempo, Cape Jazz has an infectious and irresistible groove, and tunes are often based on catchy riffs that provide keep improvisers’ harmonic and rhythmic adventures firmly rooted. Joining us to play this terrific music is John Martin, a favourite at the club whose own adventures include tonal multiphonics on the saxophone. Bring your dancing shoes!
