Award-winning journalist and broadcaster, Peter Oborne comes to Frome to deliver a vitally urgent talk (with Q&A) on the events in Gaza over the past six months and their effect on the political landscape in The West and the UK in particular.
Millions of us have been horrified at what we have seen unfolding in Gaza. We have also been aghast at the very obvious complicity of our political and media class in supporting Israel in its efforts. Israel appears to be able to slaughter with impunity while our ‘leaders’ remain steadfastly allied. The totality of this support has been almost breathtaking and bewildering.
Peter will address the moral failure of our institutions and reflect on what this implies for the citizens of Western nations. Israel has shown utter contempt for the January ruling of the International Court of Justice in which it was ordered to take “immediate and effective measures” to protect the Palestinians in the occupied Gaza Strip from genocide. Does the position of Western governments threaten the very notion of ‘International Law’?
Peter is the former chief political commentator of The Daily Telegraph from which he resigned in 2015 due to his concerns over journalistic integrity. He is now associate editor for Middle East Eye. He is the author of several books, including his latest “The Fate of Abraham: Why the West is wrong about Islam”.
Peter was named as British Press Awards Columnist of the Year in 2012 and 2016.
