Join Hauser & Wirth Somerset for this two-day workshop where you will learn the art of weaving hazel to produce your own hand-made basket. Led by Cumbrian based basket weaver, Lorna Singleton. She is one of the UK’s last remaining ‘swillers’ specialists in woven products made from oak.
Hazel can be found almost anywhere and as a result is used in basketry material all over Europe. During this workshop, participants will discuss the history of basket weaving and its recent resurgence in popularity. And also learn the skills and techniques required to each create your own unique baskets to take home.
This workshop will focus on the craft of basket weaving and over the course of two days you will learn about material selection, safe knife use and making hazel splints. We will also practise bending rims and ribs, and learn the different weaving patterns.
This course is suitable for beginners and will take place at the Maltings studio in Bruton. A degree of physical strength and dexterity is required. Please contact jacquelinemoore@hauserwirth.com if you have any questions or concerns.
Tickets are £325 and include all materials, refreshments and tuition. Plus a two course lunch on both days.
Please note, there is no parking on site at The Maltings.
