Part of Frome’s Walking Festival 2019.
Frome is believed to have begun when a monk from Malmesbury named Aldhelm crossed the river that gave the town its name around 690AD. During the following two centuries it became an important town in Saxon Wessex, with a royal palace and a role in the unification of the English kingdom. Barely anything of these Saxon origins can now be seen, though perhaps some remains still wait to be found again, hidden under the layers of the centuries since. This guided walk will explain what we know of Saxon Frome, from its founding, its links with the Wessex kings Alfred and Athelstan, to the coming of the Normans.
The route will mostly be along pavement with some steps, with a step-free alternative, and will include some steep cobbled streets. Led by Frome Town Guide Lisa Kenwright.
