Shaker Style Tray & Carrier or Box Making

Come and join us for the day and learn the traditional craft of shaker box making. Using locally sourced, sustainable wood you will get to create a small keepsake tray to start and then either an oval carriers or box, each using a bent wood technique made famous by the Shaker community in the 1800’s.
You will be taught by one of our very own artists here at SEED, the talented Richard Gibson. “Inspired by the simplicity and functionality of Shaker Design” Richard has spent years mastering the craft and passing on his skills to others.
PLEASE NOTE:
– The ticket price of £60 is for the workshop only and does NOT include materials. – Please bring £15 in cash on the day to pay Richard for your materials.
– Lunch is also NOT included in the price, but there are lots of lovely cafes near by. There will be a lunch break for approximately 1 hour.
– This is beginners level, so no experience necessary.
– Sharp tools are used during this workshop, safety instructions will be given but please attend at your own risk.

ABOUT Richard Gibson of Shaston Boxes:
” Inspired by the simplicity and functionality of the iconic items made in Shaker Communities, I make tactile oval wooden boxes and turned items in both traditional and contemporary designs. The English hardwoods I use are sourced from locally-grown trees in Dorset and the neighbouring counties.
Some years ago I was captivated by the Shaker approach to life and work and the simple but beautifully crafted objects this produced. Great innovators, they frequently refined existing designs to make them more economical in their use of materials and time, whilst achieving a high standard of workmanship. It is this economy and quality that I look to maintain in all my work. “
