We had all but lost our craft tradition including our spoon carving. It is now happily seeing a renaissance as people are again beginning to appreciate what the Swedish call Slojd. Slojd celebrates the use of natural materials and simple methods, deeply connected to the quality and expression found in useful, strong and beautiful objects crafted by hand.
In this taster workshop, experience using simple hand tools and the absorbing pleasure found in the interaction of mind and hands when making your own spoons. We will be learning the techniques involved in using the Swedish Sloyd knife and the crook knife. Taking a choice of spoon blanks (already prepared for you by hand using an axe) you will learn to carve and be able to bring objects to life that are unique and a personal expression of you.
You will complete and take home your spoon at the end of the day but depending on how quickly you pick up the technique you may even achieve two!
