The Story of the Wayuu People

18th May 2016 @ 19:30 - 21:30

£3

The Wayuu people live in the harsh desert lands of the Northern peninsula of Columbia and Venezuela, South America.  Despite resisting drought and famine in many areas they are the biggest remaining indigenous tribe of those countries, yet little is known about them.  In this talk and presentation, we will learn about their history and present situation, and discover  some of the precious pearls that make up their colourful and magical cosmovision and mythology. We will find out about their stuggle to maintain their culture, autonomy and spiritual heritage in the face of an all-devouring global society and what this can teach us about the world we live in today.

There will be a fundraising stall with crafts, clothes, jewellery and natural medicines, the proceeds of which go to poor crafts people and indigenous in Colombia.  We ask that attendees make a donation, which we suggest is around £3 to cover the costs of putting on the event and for the venue.
