As part of the Green & Healthy Future Frome programme, we are hosting an excellent opportunity for teens in July.
A climate debate workshop for up to 20 young people (13-18 years old) led by Science Boost facilitator Katie Marshall, to debate the question “Should flying be banned for 10 years?”
The workshop takes place after school on Friday 15th July from 4pm to 5pm, upstairs at the Cheese and Grain.
This structured debate involves 8 characters, each with different backgrounds and views on why flying should or shouldn’t be banned. Participants have the opportunity to express their own opinions in the debate or can stay “in character” if they are more comfortable.
Participants will learn about the impact flying has on our planet and consider the social, economic and technical issues around climate change and human activity. Participants will develop their ability to listen respectfully, learn from others’ perspectives and have empathy and compassion to those with differing views to themselves. They are encouraged to reconsider their opinions as we progress through the debate. Participants will learn how to have difficult conversations and disagree with one another in a calm and measured way. They’ll build their discussion skills and learn to back up their opinions with facts and data.
Participants will leave this workshop with greater knowledge about climate change and with positive ideas for how individuals and organisations can have an impact on our planet and health.
This event has been organised as part of our Health & Climate Conference on Friday 15 July at the Cheese and Grain.
