Sustainable Fashion Week is back this year from 20th September – 29th September, with the Frome Hub hosted by Everyone Needs Pockets. They are offering a brilliant and thought-provoking array of workshops, drop-in sessions and talks for all things sustainable and fashion! Additionally, throughout Sustainable Fashion Week, Frome’s independent and charity shops will promote sustainable fashion through creative and inspiring displays. What’s on at Sustainable Fashion Week 2024:
7th – 29th September: Worn Out in Frome
Kicking off SFW events in Frome, this is an exhibition of worn and mended items of dress from the collection at Frome Museum and on loan from visible mender and author Skye Pennant. Each item tells the story of a life worn out through clothes in Frome.
20th – 29th September: Frome’s Sustainable Fashion Week Window Trail
Throughout Sustainable Fashion Week, Frome’s independent and charity shops will showcase creative and inspiring exhibits promoting sustainable fashion. Can be viewed across the town.
20th September, 9:30am – 4:30pm: From Flax to Fibre
How is cloth made? Reconnect with nature by transforming flax plants into fibre for cordage and linen yarn.
A three hour practical workshop for adults 18+ with Simon and Ann from Flaxland UK who will introduce you to the processes of breaking, scutching, hackling and drop spinning flax.
21st & 25th September, 2pm – 4pm: Feeling Dressed with Dr Lucy Gundry
Join Dr Lucy Gundry to become a dress detective! We will explore how items of dress from the Frome Museum collection have been worn, mended, repaired, altered or repurposed in order to extend their life and use.
24th September, 4:15pm – 6:15pm: Mending & Alterations with Anna
Broken zip, missing a button, hem coming down? Don’t throw it away, let Anna show you how to fix it! Everyone has something in their wardrobe that’s seen better days but you can’t bear to part with. Whether you are a beginner or just a bit rusty then the tips and techniques in this masterclass will enable you to go on and produce beautiful garments.
25th September, 10:30am – 5:30pm and 29th September, 10am – 4pm: Vintage and Preloved Sale
Popicoq will be supporting Sustainable Fashion Week with a special sale of Vintage and Pre-loved clothing, alongside original pieces created from recycled materials.
26th September, 7pm – 8:30pm: An Evening with Scott Wimsett and The Vintage Collective
Scott Wimsett is a presenter, social media beauty and fashion director, and sustainability expert. We will be talking about the worrying rise in fast fashion, and the importance of making conscious decisions when it comes to what we wear and what we buy. We will also discuss how to wear and style vintage.
28th September, 10am – 4pm: The Pod Scrap Store
The Pod Scrapstore will be open to the public and stock an assortment of fabrics, haberdashery items etc for clothing repair and creation.
28th & 29th September, 10am – 4pm: Pattern Swap
Swap your clothing patterns at Millie Moon!
Bring along any patterns as long as complete, if been used please mark the size that has been cut on the front of the pattern.
28th September, 11am – 2pm: Stitch It Don’t Ditch It
Not a protest, but an ‘encouragement’ to share the love of mending our clothes and demonstrate the pleasure and necessity of garment repair.
28th September, 12pm – 4pm: Frome Wardrobe Collective Clothes Swap
Frome Wardrobe Collective return with another fantastic clothes swap event in support of Sustainable Fashion Week. We have helped Frome keep thousands of clothing items and accessories in circulation.
We welcome all genders, ages and sizes to join us in indulging in slow, sustainable style.
28th September, 12:30pm – 2:30pm: How to Mend Your Clothes with Everyone Needs Pockets
Holes in your clothes? Button fallen off? Tear in a favourite shirt? Things lying about waiting for that mend? Here’s your opportunity to fix them in this hands on session.
Volunteer stitchers and menders from the Everyone Needs Pockets Textile Reuse Network can help work out what needs doing and how to fix it, supporting you to mend your own clothes.
28th September, 6pm – 9pm: Talk and Swap
An evening exploring material futures and regenerative design with Caroline Till, co-founder of FranklinTill, a design futures consultancy and co-author of ‘Radical Matter:Rethinking materials for a sustainable future. Bring along Fabric, haberdashery items and textile related books to swap.
29th September, 10am – 1pm: Visible Mending with Skye of Slow Stitch Club
Slow Stitch Club teaches the art of visible mending using simple and traditional sewing techniques to repair clothing in a creative, visible and intentional way. This workshop is suitable for beginners and sewing enthusiasts alike. Bring along a denim or cotton garment to mend.
29th September, 11am – 3pm: RETOLD Fashion Fair
Join us for a sustainable preloved and vintage fashion fair. We are passionate about shopping secondhand and keeping quality clothes circulating within our community. Ditch the apps and come and shop preloved in person!
29th September, 3pm – 6:30pm: Reusing, Reinventing and Reimagining Clothing
A workshop with the emphasis on embellishment. You will learn about planning and practical application with suggestions, support and examples. Anna Fraenkel is a professional soft furnishing maker for the last 25 years, she is passionate about producing and exploring ideas of reimagined, wacky and wearable clothing.
