Things to do this October Half Term 2021

It’s nearly half term, Halloween’s around the corner and there’s a variety of events and activities happening in and around Frome to help keep the family entertained. Here’s a selection of what’s on…

Apple Day at the Newt – 23rd & 24th October

Boy holding an appleA two-day celebration of all things apple; from juice pressing to apple games, displays, recipes, cyder tastings and tractor tours through the orchards. Expect live music and DJs, apple-themed menus as well as the ever popular hog roasting on a spit over fire for the carnivores!

Free entry for those with standard garden membership.

Children’s Halloween Party – 24th October

Join the spooky fun at the annual Children’s Halloween Party, at the Assembly Rooms. There will be a disco provided by PDJ Disco, lots of party dances and best Halloween Costume Competition.

Children’s tickets are £8, adults are free. Each child will receive a burger or hot dog and a party bag to take home.

Family Felting Workshops – 25th & 26th October

Join local felt artist Bessie Bidder for a chance to try your hand at felting – making a felt picture or finger puppets.

Children of any age can come along (under 8 must be accompanied by an adult). Tickets cost £12 per family.

Children’s Pottery – 25th October

A class for children to get creative with clay. They will learn how to throw on the wheel and how to sculpt in clay. The children’s masterpieces are then fired and glazed (and fired again) to become permanent pieces of art for you to treasure.

Each child should come away with at least a bowl/mug and sculptural piece all made by them and decorated to their own design. £25 per child.

Bugsy Malone – 26th-27th October

Based on the hit movie of the same name, Spellbound – the youth group of Frome Musical Theatre Company – are proud to present Alan Parker’s Bugsy Malone!

Set in 1920’s New York and narrated by our hero, the candy-coated Bugsy Malone, follow the story of the battle for power between the rival mobster gangs of the bumbling Fat Sam and the smooth-talking Dandy Dan.

With show-stopping hits including Fat Sam’s Grand Slam, Bad Guys and So You Wanna Be a Boxer, Bugsy Malone is the perfect treat for everyone.

Matinee performance on 27th.

Family Lantern Workshop – 28th October

With only a month to go until the Frome Christmas light switch and lantern parade, this is the perfect opportunity to get ready and make your very own lantern. In this family workshop, Mel and Aliss will help you make asimple flower shaped lantern using Somerset grown willow withies, tissue paper and glue.

Glow in the Park – 30th October

Join us for a magical and spectacular evening with the South West’s very first audience attended drone show! This unique, free event will also have lots of autumnal, fun activities for young and old alike including apple pressing, tree planting, face painting, lantern making, glow in the dark pumpkin decorating alongside an appearance by Frome’s Rare Species and various food stalls hosted by local organisations.

Pumpkin Carving at The Newt – 31st October

Have a go at carving weird and wonderful designs into this season’s pumpkins. There will be tips on the best carving techniques, and at the end of the day the pumpkins will be judged and prizes awarded to the best entries.

Meanwhile, tuck into pumpkin-themed treats at different venues around the Gardens.

Free entry for those with standard garden membership.
